I started my martial arts journey in 2009 at the age of 15. I was always interested in martial arts and sports in general when I was growing up, but I was overweight as a kid and had very little confidence. I experienced a lot of abuse in my upbringing and was surrounded by alcoholism and poverty. So as a kid, I had a lot of resentment and anger that I didn’t have an outlet for. One of my friends started training Jiu-Jitsu and told me that it was great for learning self-defense and losing weight so I thought I’d give it a try. During my first class, I was exhausted and got tapped out many times but I was fascinated by the sport and was instantly hooked. Training martial arts completely changed my life. It helped me to lose a significant amount of weight while building my confidence, reducing my anxiety and enhancing my self-esteem. These are benefits that martial arts can offer to anyone who is willing to put in the effort and time.
Martial arts has given my life meaning and purpose. It has been an avenue to forge and better myself. I began teaching in 2012 and have been a full-time instructor since then. I started competing in local tournaments and went on to compete at international levels. Some of these tournaments include the IBJJF World Championships and IBJJF PAN-American Championships. As my love for martial arts progressed, I decided to start competing in MMA. I have had five amateur MMA fights and rather than focusing on going pro, I discovered that my real passion lied in coaching and helping others. Training Muay Thai in Thailand had always been a dream of mine and in 2018, I had the opportunity to fulfill that dream. I traveled around the country seeking out sessions with some of the best trainers that Thailand has to offer.
My favourite part of instructing is getting to share something that I am so passionate about with others. I have witnessed it transform people’s lives and I am honored to have been a part of their journey. Martial arts is a powerful tool that can push you mentally, emotionally and physically. The best part of training is that you learn practical skills like self-defense while blowing-off steam and strengthening yourself. Whether you are a full-time athlete or just beginning your training, you will experience significant growth in many ways.

I began my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey at the age of 6, inspired by watching my oldest brother train. Growing up in challenging circumstances, I initially did not enjoy the training, but through years of consistent commitment and hard work, I discovered its true value. Jiu-Jitsu helped me carve out a positive path forward, one that I continue to follow to this day. As a young competitor, I thrived on the challenge of tournaments, which pushed me to improve and build greater discipline and resilience.
Between the ages of 10 and 12, I began assisting my older brother with classes, and that experience ignited my passion for teaching and guiding others to reach their full potential. Over time, my appreciation for Jiu-Jitsu has only grown deeper; I value the demands of competition, the personal growth it fosters, and above all, the strong family and lifelong friendships formed through training at A-F Academy. I particularly enjoy teaching our kids' program, where I help young students develop confidence, especially those facing difficulties and witness their progress both on and off the mats.
Jiu-Jitsu has been transformative in my life, and I encourage anyone considering it to start and stay committed; the rewards in strength, mindset, and community are profound. As a dedicated member of this team, I am living proof of what perseverance and the right environment can achieve. My goal is to earn my black belt while continuing to grow, contribute to our academy, and support this remarkable family we have built together.
